This was a special show for me this week, and I'm very grateful to have the opportunity to share one of my favorite artists broadly on WREK. Yussef Dayes is a experimental jazz drummer from South London who grew up surrounded by music and cultivated his craft at a young age alongside his family. He often collaborates with other artists like Venna, Alfa Mist, and Tom Misch, and those productions turn into something truly special. I find myself putting his music on repeat getting something new out of it each time.
Dayes does perform live often in England, and I, personally, would pay top dollar to see him perform live in Atlanta. Discovering his live performance and documentary, "Yussef Dayes in Japan", was a catalyst into my deep dive into the UK jazz scene and other new age, avant-garde jazz artists that have forever shaped my listening and taste.
I handpicked some tracks by Dayes that have been on repeat for me recently, and if I did this same show a month prior, then I probably would've had a completely different track list. His full discography is worth listening to, and I highly recommend looking into his live, open-air performances (embedded below) to see first-hand how he combines music, nature, and world cultures to create his unique sound.
