Hello, hello! It's Aiya. As you know, Kirby graduated and Jacob is not here this summer, so you gonna be hearing a lot from me! I will try to run the show weekly with a few exceptions.
By the way, our phone number is 4048942468 and I take suggestions for which countries we should do next! I also would love to chat and hear what you guys think about the show. I am here Mondays 5-6 pm.
This week we will dive into music of Indonesia (the recording of the show is here!). First, we will look into Kecak chants (monkey chants).
Next, we will listen to an instrument called anklung. It is a musical instrument made out of bamboo that is native to Sundanese people of Java and looks like a collection of frame. Each frame has its own pitch.
In the next song I will show you a genre of music called kapaci suling. It is very open to improvisation and involves two instruments. Kapaci is a zither, which has its origins in guzheng from China. Suling is an Indonesian flute blown from the end, and they can be of different sizes.
Kendang (or Gendang) is a drum with two heads that is considered the most sacred of all musical instruments among Makassarese people and are used for ceremonies.
One of my most favorite genres is Gamelan. It just sounds magical.
Next we will shift into playing a song by Nasidia Ria, musical group well known to play modern qasidah. Qasidah is an Arabic word for religious poetry accompanied by chanting and also percussion.
Next genre of music is Kroncong. It evolved after Portuguese arrived with European instruments and is associated with struggle for independence. The song Bengawan Solo is one of the most famous songs in this genre.
Ismail Marzuki also combined Kroncong with jazz fusion in a lot of the songs he composed, and he wrote several bangers.
Dewa 19 is one of the bands that represent Islamic Rock.
For pop, I will play you some Hindia!
Until next time, enjoy music!
