WREK HD2 ON AIR!

WREK Logo We are very excited to announce the launch of our new HD subchannel, WREK Atlanta HD2. The subchannel is available to those with HD radios and to those without via live streaming on http://www.wrek.org (see the menu on the left). This new outlet for our programming allows us to air more Georgia Tech sports, public affairs, and other Georgia Tech related content, as well as more of the music you love even if you have never heard it before.

The second channel's format is under development and is currently an automated mix of all of WREK's formats. In the future, we will be developing new programming for the subchannel and a way to air programs that are pre-empted by sports broadcasts. In addition, we hope to provide the same web functionality for the new channel that we have for our main channel, including the two week running archive. This new technology is offering us many new opportunities to share great music and get the word out about the great things going on at Georgia Tech; we are just beginning to explore the extent of our capabilities.

We would specifically like to thank the Georgia Tech community for their support in our upgrade to this new technology. All those who worked hard to set up the sub-channel and those working to bring this project to its full fruition deserve many special thanks as well. Without the support of the Georgia Tech campus and our wonderful staff, this would still be a dream.

We would love to hear your ideas, comments, and criticisms of the new channel; send them to us and we will be sure to get back to you!

FCC Approves Upcoming WREK Power Increase

Best Case Increased Coverage - Click for More Information Our FCC application for a coverage increase has been approved! WREK was issued an official construction permit (PDF) for an upgrade from 40,000 Watts to 100,000 Watts on September 22, 2008.

Our new transmitter gave us half of what we need to complete this upgrade. We have not yet begun the hard work of preparing our tower for, designing, and constructing the new antenna we need, though.

Our tower Our 30 year old antenna is certainly due for an upgrade, and now we can improve our coverage in the process! We could be a 75,000 - 100,000 Watt station by Summer 2010, perhaps sooner. The details will take another year to nail down, with tens of thousands of dollars to raise and hundreds more hours of research, regulatory work, and negotiations left for our student engineers and our alumni friends to do. We're working hard to bring more of you the healing energy of quality, diverse programming that is WREK.

Thanks go to alumni Matt Wesolowski, General Manager of WYAB in Jackson, MS, and Thomas Hildebrandt, patent attorney at the local firm Thomas | Kayden, for their assistance with all of the complex regulatory and engineering work required to accomplish this feat.
